More than 300 Boyce College students network with local businesses at inaugural Career and Internship Expo

Communications Staff — November 10, 2017

More than 300 students attended Boyce College’s first-ever Career and Internship Expo, doubling the organizers’ expectations. The Nov. 8 event, an initiative by the college’s new Office of Vocation and Career Development, allowed students to network with local ministries, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

Boyce College is the undergraduate school of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

The new office assists students — whether near graduation or just beginning their college career — as they navigate job applications or finding opportunities to gain experience. From resume building to networking, developing interview skills and finding internships for experience, the Office of Vocation and Career Development, in collaboration with Southern Seminary’s office of Student Success, provides assistance and guidance to Boyce students entering a new phase of their careers.

Boyce College Dean Matthew J. Hall believes this collaboration with local businesses provides both students and companies valuable partnerships that produces opportunities for “not only opportunities for career deployment, but for missional deployment.”

“Companies, non-profits, and Christian organizations have discovered that Boyce College students are a wise investment in building a superb workforce,” Hall said, commenting on the recent event. “I am delighted by the work Boyce College is doing to connect our students with so many opportunities for internships and employment. As we educate students to go wherever Christ sends them, these partnerships represent not only opportunities for career deployment, but for missional deployment.”

Ben Hussung, advisor for the Office of Vocation and Career Development, planned and executed the event, inviting more than 30 exhibitors to network with Boyce College students. The department hoped to accomplish two goals during the event: “to provide an opportunity for students to explore the wealth of opportunities accessible to them, and to help students to begin thinking more proactively about life after college,” Hussung said.

Attendees networked with businesses and ministries, including the International Mission Board, UPS, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Chick-fil-A, Crossing Camps, several local Christian academies, Enterprise, and others.
