Boyce College’s Daniel Smith Named 2025 Pete Maravich Award Recipient

Travis Hearne — March 25, 2025

The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) announced Daniel Smith of Boyce College as the recipient of the 2025 Pete Maravich Award for Men’s Basketball. Named after legendary basketball player “Pistol Pete” Maravich, the award reflects Maravich’s legacy both on the court and in his later years as a devoted follower of Christ.

Boyce Head Coach and Athletic Director Michael McCarty said Smith’s achievements in athletics, academics, and ministry make him a fitting recipient of this honor.

“Daniel is a leader on our team and on our campus,” McCarty said. “He leads on the floor with example and word. He pushes guys to be great and encourages guys to reflect the character of Christ on and off the court. He is a great athlete and works extremely hard at basketball, but desires more to see people come to know the Lord and see Him through his life on campus, on the floor, and in our community.”

Originally from Huntsville, Alabama, Smith has made a significant mark on and off the court. A senior at Boyce College, he is on track to graduate with his undergraduate degree and a Master of Divinity (MDiv), demonstrating his deep dedication to education and ministry.

Smith sensed a call to ministry from a young age and has actively pursued it—already preaching at his church in Louisville and his hometown in Alabama. He leads weekly Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Bible studies with local athletic teams and serves as president of the Boyce Preaching Society, which connects preachers with local nursing homes.

Smith has also established himself as a dominant force on the basketball court, earning Mideast All-Region Honorable Mention honors last season. This year, he averaged nearly 11 points and over five rebounds per game while ranking among the NCCAA’s top 25 players in blocks per game for two consecutive seasons. His dedication extends beyond athletics, as he excels academically earning Dean’s List recognition while pursuing a seminary track in biblical theological studies.

Smith is grateful for the award and thanks God for blessing his efforts.

“This award means a lot to me,” Smith said. “It shows that God is blessing the work that I have put in. I don’t need the validation of an award, but it is an encouragement to see that people have recognized the way I try to walk faithfully on and off the court.”

In addition to Smith’s recognition, several other Boyce players received high honors from the NCCAA. Trevor Nauert was named NCCAA 2nd Team All-American and earned the title of NCCAA Mideast Player of the Year. Josh Sangalli was selected to the NCCAA Mideast 1st Team All-Region and named Mideast Newcomer of the Year. Andrew Thomas earned NCCAA Mideast 2nd Team All-Region and was recognized as Mideast Freshman of the Year. Daniel Smith also received NCCAA Mideast All-Region Honorable Mention.
